Cappadocia

Cappadocia or ‘Land of the Horses’ was famed in Roman times for the for the pedigree of its horses. Today, this central landlocked region of Turkey is visited for its fascinating and uniquely beautiful landscape: towns and cathedrals hewn from the mountain rock, and columns of natural rock that tower like ‘fairy chimneys’ above the plains.

Cappadocia was once vital to the early development of Christianity, and visiting the later medieval ‘rock-out’ chapels with their raw Byzantine frescoes is an unforgettable experience. There are underground cities where up to 20,000 people used to live eight storeys down.

Art Tours likes to stay in hotels that are hewn from the rocks too!
