Eastern Turkey

Eastern Turkey is much less explored than Istanbul and western Turkey and this makes for an adventure. The huge variety of sites span the full breadth of Turkish history from Hattousha, the capital of the Hittite empire, to the monuments of the Turkish Seljuk Kingdom at Sivas and Erzurum, and old bridges on the Tigris and Euphrates. At Antioquia lies the cave of St-Peter and the Apostles, and at Nemrut Dag the giant statues of the Commagenes display a fascinating hybrid of Hellenistic & Persian art. The abandoned Armenian churches at Kars are among the most picturesque sites in the country. Mount Ararat makes for a beautiful walk, if a little uphill!
