Istanbul is the only city in the world that sits astride two continents. As Constantinople it became the ‘New Rome’: seat of the Roman Empire for 1,100 years and bastion of Christianity in the east. In 1453 Constantine’s city became ‘Istanbul’ after it fell to the Ottoman Empire; sultans replaced Roman emperors and churches became mosques.
As a result of this confluence of art and religion, Istanbul is unparalleled for the richness of its culture. The Hagia Sophia is one of the great architectural achievements of mankind and sits opposite the Blue Mosque, arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. The Topkapi Palace is filled with the treasures of the sultans, while many of the city’s churches recall the beauties of Byzantine art and architecture.
The city is filled with buzzing markets, delicious restaurants and many other delights. You and your Art Tours lecturer will be joined be an experienced Turkish guide to take you to the very best of what Istanbul has to offer.
Testimonials
we carry with us fond memories of the Turkey odyssey. I really never dreamed of seeing all those places and things -- so much of where our civilization began -- and I keep basking in the recall of what we did see and how we managed to do all of that. You get and deserve the credit.
